Cracking the Code of National Board Writing

Understand the Prompts. Support Your Claims. Make Every Word Count.

A Live, Interactive Writer’s Workshop for National Board Candidates

Writing for National Board Certification is unlike most other professional writing. Candidates must communicate complex instructional thinking, support their claims with specific evidence, and respond directly to prompts—all within strict page limits.

The good news? National Board writing is a genre that can be explicitly taught, practiced, and strengthened.

In this interactive, three-hour workshop, you’ll learn how to recognize what National Board prompts are asking, organize your thinking, and write with greater clarity, precision, and purpose.

What You’ll Learn

1. Recognize the Three Types of National Board Writing

Learn to distinguish between descriptive, analytical, and reflective writing. Identify key words and phrases in component directions that signal which type of writing is expected.

2. Make Claims and Support Them with Evidence

Learn how to construct clear, focused claims and support them with specific, relevant evidence from your teaching practice and student learning.

3. Make Every Word Count

National Board writing requires precision. Learn strategies for answering prompts directly, eliminating unnecessary language, and communicating your thinking effectively within page limits.

What to Expect

This is not simply a presentation about writing. You’ll participate in guided analysis, examine sample responses, and complete short, structured writing exercises to apply what you’re learning.

The workshop is designed for National Board candidates across all certification areas and components.

All registered participants will receive access to the workshop recording after the live session.
